Shirley Marie Penton, 77 of Lucedale, passed away Monday morning at Greene Rural Health Center in Leakesville. Shirley was born February 9, 1942 in rural Greene county, the 6th of 8 children and daughter of Boyce & Leona (Flemming) Penton. She grew up on the family farm where they raised most of what they ate. From an early age, Shirley loved sewing, doing lots of sewing and alterations for friends, neighbors and others in the community. She also worked as a waitress and did other jobs in her life, whatever she needed to do to provide for her kids and family. Shirley lost two of her kids in a tragic vehicle accident that occurred in Arkansas back in 1993, and she was never quite the same. She was a simply fantastic cook, and could make one of the absolute best pound cakes you ever put in your mouth. In recent years, she attended Rymes Missionary Baptist Church. An awesome mother and wonderful woman, she will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded by her parents, Boyce & Leona Penton; her son David and daughter Tammy Rogers; sisters Jackie Flemming, Bernice Fairchild and Nancy Penton, and brothers Buddy and Sonny Penton. Left to cherish her memories are: her children - Daniel (Tanya) Rogers of Lucedale, Cyngela Scruggs and Victor Rogers of McLain, and Victorianna Rogers of New Augusta; two sisters, Melba Jean Cobb, also of McLain, and Linda Regan of Columbia, along with fourteen grandchildren, and "a pile" of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Shirley's final wishes were to be cremated, which her family is honoring. A memorial service is planned for Thursday, Nov. 21, 2019, 2:00 PM at her home in Lucedale, with all who knew her welcomed to attend. Trinity Funeral Services is honored to serve the Penton family in their time of need, and asks everyone to keep the family lifted up in prayer over the coming days.
