Sarah Hancock Obituary

Sarah Alice Terry Hancock, 89, of Lumberton Mississippi passed away Friday, September 11, 2020 at her home with family. Sarah was born February 6, 1931 in Summit, Mississippi. She was married to Carl ‘XL’ Hancock and has one daughter, Lynn Shamburger. She received her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1964, followed by her Master of Education in School Administration from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1977. Sarah was a beloved teacher in the Lumberton School District for 29 years. During her time in the school system, she was a first and second grade teacher, a Title III ESEA Coordinator, Chapter 1 and 2 Supervisor, and a special education supervisor. She loved all her students and each was special and brought her joy. Sarah was a devout member of Lumberton United Methodist Church, where she could often be heard playing the organ during Sunday services. After her retirement she spent most of her time reading, gardening, and with family. She had a long, wonderful life and will be missed by the many people she touched with her kindness and generosity. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl 'XL' Hancock, mother and father, Walter C. and Mable Terry, and her sisters, Dorothy McMurry, Mable C. Martin, Laurie Helen Felder, and Bobbye Ward. Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter Lynn Shamburger and son-in-law John Shamburger, her grandson Michael Shamburger and wife Erin, her granddaughter Rebecca Guynes and husband Michael, her great grandchildren Braelyn Guynes, Ryen Shamburger, Allie Shamburger, and Madden Guynes, her sister, Gene Fenn, brother-in-law; Thomas Hancock, sister-in-law Missy Hancock, and a multitude of nieces, nephews, and friends. Visitation will be held 10:30 with a service at 11:00, Monday September 14, 2020 at Adams Methodist Church, Summit, MS. Trinity Funeral Services is honored to assist the Hancock family during this difficult time and asks that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
