Samuel Caruthers Sykes, 87 of Grenada, passed away Saturday, December 19th at Grenada Living Center. Sam was born February 21, 1933 at the family home in Duck Hill and was the third of seven children to Jim and Sallie (Harbin) Sykes. He grew up a Mississippi country boy in the depression era, farming, raising cotton and animals. Sam enjoyed riding horses, and had an accident when he was 16 years old that broke his leg. Living out in the country where medical resources weren't readily available, the injury caused him lifelong issues, but that didn't slow Sam down. He went to work in sales for National Shirt Company, living in major areas selling shirts. Memphis, Denver and Des Moines are just a couple of the markets Sam lived in and worked. As he grew tired of being moved, Sam went to work for Exxon and settled in Texas. he was the first hired employee of Slough Equipment in the oilfield supply industry, where he spent over 25 years. In 1984, he moved to Northeast Texas and ran a small bait and tackle shop before moving to Friendswood where his son lived for a while, before coming full circle and returning home to Duck Hill.
