Richard Balkcom, Sr. Obituary

Richard A. Balkcom, Sr., 69 of Carriere, passed away early Tuesday morning. He was born May 5, 1951 in Orlando, FL, the son of Jasper and Francis (Kemp) Balkcom. In his younger years, Richard enjoyed cartoons, especially Popeye, shooting marbles and riding his bicycle. As he grew, he got into boxing and cars, preferring those that could get up and go. Richard originally obtained an associates degree and went to work as a mortician, but his love for cars never left him. He would became a mechanic, rising to the level of Master certification, of which he was very proud. In his spare time, Richard enjoyed fishing, collecting coins, playing chess and spending time with his family. A Christian by faith, he has called Carriere home since 1994, participating in the Relay for Life and other community events whenever possible. He enjoyed creative writing and going to garage sales to see what he could find. A loving husband, father and grandfather, he will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Richard was preceded by his parents, Jasper and Francis; his son David Garrett; sisters Sandra and Josephine, and brothers John and Jimmy. Left to cherish his memories are: his loving wife of 25 years, Samantha; daughters Kristen (Sean) Lockwood, Kathlyn (Robert) Williams, Betsy and Kathleen Balkcom; sons Andrew Garrett, Benjamin (Megan) Garrett, Richard Balkcom, Jr., and his nephew that he raised as his own, Ricky Balkcom, Tommy Saxon; sisters Kathleen Balkcom and Kathy Urban. Richard leaves a legacy of eleven grandchildren and two great grands, along with numerous extended family, friends and cars he repaired through the years. A private Celebration of Life will be held Saturday afternoon, October 3rd.
