Mel Luna, 83, of Brandon passed away peacefully at his home on December 27th. He was born Melvin Leroy Luna in Blue Mountain, MS, was a member of Meadow Grove Baptist Church in Brandon, and previously attended Crossgates Baptist Church in Brandon.
Mel founded Mel Luna Saw Company in Jackson in 1967, and the business still carries his name today. He and his beloved late wife, Betty, worked together at the saw company until their retirement in 2000. Mel enjoyed time with family, baseball, golf and helping nearly anyone who was in need. He had a sense of humor and practical way that he carried with him throughout his life. Mel put God first in all aspects of what he did and shared his faith in practice with those around him. He was a well-loved person who was described as someone who brings a smile to the faces of those who think of him.
Mel is survived by his daughter Gina Luna of Byram; his son Matt Luna of The Hague, the Netherlands; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Betty Luna; daughter Gail Luna Blankenship; and son Stanley “Pete” Luna.
A memorial service will be held for Mel on Tuesday, January 4th. Those wishing to attend can RSVP at (601) 209-6511 for the location and time.
