Mattie Gordon Obituary

Ms. Mattie May Gordon, 85 of Wiggins, passed away Monday afternoon at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport, following a lengthy illness. Mattie was born April 22, 1934 in Louisiana, the daughter of Emile & Florence (Newman) Portier. She grew up Beadcco, LA, learning to sew at a young age and enjoyed it through life. She worked in several areas through her life, mostly in the Hammond area, managing Hancock Fabrics, working at Sally's, and at Walmart in the fabrics department. Mattie loved to make clothes, which she did for her children, grandchildren and others as well. She also enjoyed paint-by-numbers and reading in her spare time, and enjoyed sitting on the porch supervising any yardwork that was being done. Mattie was a Christian and member of Melville Baptist Church in Pontchatoula, LA for many years. She is remembered as a loving mother and grandmother that was somewhat strict on her kids. She only told them once, and never having a problem speaking her mind on any subject. Mattie had a bubbly, outgoing personality, and will be fondly remembered by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded by her parents, Emile & Florence Portier, and her daughter Polly Alixia. Left to cherish her memories are: her children, one daughter, Judy (Billy) Cochran of Wiggins, and sons, twins Terry Portier of Wiggins and Jerry (Linda) Portier of Lake Charles, LA, and George Gordon of Livingston, LA. She leaves a legacy of 7 grandchildren, 12 great=grands, and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Mattie's final wishes were to be cremated, which her family is honoring. A memorial service may be set at a later date.
