Obituary

Lela Mary (Haas) Curry, 57 of Waveland, passed away January 28th, 2023 at Singing River Hospital in Gulfport. She was born on Christmas Day 1965 at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, the eighth of nine children to parents Wallace Edward and Lora Marie (Lee) Haas. Lela grew up in the Kiln on the banks of the Jordan River. Her and her siblings rode their bikes all over, swam in the river a lot, and listened to lots of LPs and 45s. Lela loved her music, keeping up with the BeeGees, Elvis, Journey, and all of her favorites through the years. She liked the music she grew up with so much that her kids and granddaughter sang 80s music all the time. Lela attended Hancock county schools, graduating from Hancock North Central with the Class of 1985. She worked at the vacuum cleaner factory in Long Beach for a bit before settling down and starting her family in the Bayou LaCroix area. Lela raised three boys of her own, along with several others she kept and cared for through the years. After she got her boys up, she decided to get her CNA license and go back to work, spending several years working at nursing homes and home health agencies on the Coast. She wasn't one to sit idly by, even opening and running a janitorial business with her husband at one time. She is remembered as an outgoing lady who wasn't afraid to speak her mind. Family members, and those who knew her best, all readily tell you that Lela had no filter. She was one who put the needs of everyone else before her very own. Her children and family was her life, but when a granddaughter came along, well let's just say she had her wrapped. Lela was well known to her nieces and nephews as the "cool aunt", and were always around her. She continued listening to her 70s and 80s music, and enjoyed going out to eat, or taking her granddaughter to the zoo, the fair, or whatever else she could. Lela also enjoyed a trip to the casino from time to time, to play and have dinner, but mostly she was at home. A loving sister, mother, and grandmother, her caring heart and warm personality will be sadly missed by all whose life she touched. She was preceded by her parents, Wallace and Lora Haas; and her brother Paul Haas. Left to cherish her memories are: her three boys: Michael, Matthew, and Aaron Bourgeois, all of Waveland; her brothers: Eddie (Deborah) Haas of Richland, Cletus (Joan) Haas of Matthews, NC, Kyle (Linda) and Linus (Tiffany) Haas, both of the Kiln, with her sisters Barbara (Walt) Lonnborg of Gulfport, Joan (Marvin) Lacoste of the Kiln, and Arlene Lacoste of Bay St. Louis. Lela leaves her only granddaughter, Nova "Toot" Gros, along with numerous extended family, friends, and untold numbers of patients and others she cared for through the years. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 3rd at Annunciation Catholic Church in Kiln. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM, followed by the funeral service at 12:00 PM, with Father Sabastian Thekketh, Jr. officiating. Afterward, Lela will be laid to rest in Bayou Coco Cemetery.
