John Shedd Obituary

John Harry Shedd, 85 of Lumberton, passed away at his home Monday evening, Dec. 27th. He was born April 25, 1936 in Wayne county, the son of John Prentiss and Minnie Marie (Blackledge) Shedd. Raised in rural South Mississippi in the years following the Great Depression, John knew a thing or two about the country life. He learned how to grow a garden, to raise animals, and how to fix things, often using only the tools and parts they had at home. Those skills were honed over the years and John used them all throughout his life. The man could literally fix anything at all. If he came across something he didn't know about, John learned about it and how to fix it. He had an incredible knowledge of tractors and was often the go to guy for those who had questions about them. John also knew what a day's work was all about, and he worked hard every day. For fun, he hauled hay and pulpwood because that's the man he was. John was from the "old school" and firmly believed in raising everything, from garden vegetables to cattle for beef. He is fondly remembered as an 'ol timer that loved to keep things lively. John loved to pick and always had something going. A Christian by faith, he attended and served at First Baptist Church of Lumberton for many years. John truly loved his family and getting together with them, especially around the holidays and special occasions. He is enjoying a much-deserved rest today and will definitely be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded by his parents, John and Minnie Shedd, and his sister Lillie Mae Hodge. Left to cherish the many fond memories are: his children, sons Charles (Tammy) Shedd of Lumberton and Timmie (Stacy) Shedd of Orange Beach, AL, with daughters Gayle (Ray) Thompson of Blythewood, SC and Shira (Tim) Wade, also of Lumberton; and a close nephew Roland (Barbara) Hodge of Purivs. John leaves a legacy of six grandchildren, twelve great-grands, and ten great-great grandchildren, along with numerous extended family and friends through the years. The family will receive friends for visitation from noon until 1:00 PM, Thursday, December 30th at Trinity Funeral Services in Lumberton. A graveside service will follow at Lumberton City Cemetery, with Rev. Tommy Jones officiating. Trinity Funeral Services is honored to serve the Shedd family in their time of need and asks everyone to keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
