Janet Carol (Todd) Rains

Janet Carol Rains, 66 of Gulfport, passed away September 28th at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport. She was the oldest of three children to Thayon Lafayette & Carolyn Ann (Morgan) Todd, born in Laurel September 18, 1954. Janet grew up in Jones county early on before her family moved to the coast. She was a country girl at heart and came to love animals, especially riding horses. She also loved to read and had a talent for free-hand drawing, becoming quite accomplished over the years. She couldn't read enough as a young lady, spending many hours reading by flashlight in bed so as not to get caught, long after she was supposed to have been sleeping. A graduate of Gulfport High School in the early 70s, Janet married David Johnson and made their home in Long Beach. Janet was never one for make-up and lots of frilly girl stuff, preferring the simple, country life instead. Her love of the outdoors remained with her, taking her family & kids to the river to swim and have fun many times over the years. She is remembered as a big sister that was pretty strict about her room and very possessive with her "stuff", but also very protective of her little sister and brother as well. A loving and rather strict mother, Janet kept her son "in line"...or did her best to anyway. She was a loving sister, mother and grandmother that will be sadly missed by all whose life she touched. Janet was preceded by her parents, Thayon L. & Carol Ann Todd, and her brother, Bruce Todd. She is survived by her only son, Jeremiah (Candace) Johnson of Gulfport, and her five grandchildren: Jayce, Caitlyn, Jordan, and twins Channing and Jewels; her sister Patricia Garrett and two nieces, Crystal (Brandon) Fountain and Starr (Morris) Johnson, with many extended family and friends. Janet's final wishes were to be cremated, which her family is honoring and will hold a memorial service at a later date.
