Gussie Mae Johnson, 83 of the Bond community, passed away February 03, 2024, at St. Dominick Hospital in Jackson. She was born August 21,1940 at the family home in Wiggins, one of nine children to parents Gus and Catherine (Dorsett) Brooks. Named Gussie after her father, she grew up in the Dawson community of Stone County, moving to Bond when she married. Gussie attended and graduated from Stone Training School, and worked at the garment factory in Wiggins until it burned down, then went to International Paper feeding the dryer until her retirement. She is remembered as a loving daughter and sister, as well as a wife, mother, aunt, counselor and friend to so many. "Aunt Gussie" was a well-known pillar of the community and known as one who loved to shop for a bargain. Garage sales were always on her route, along with Hudson's, where she could spend the entire day just digging. She was a Christian by faith and attended New Prospect Baptist Church in Bond. Her family was the love of her life and she devoted it to them every day. Her legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of all whose life she touched. Gussie was preceded by her parents, Gus and Catherine Brooks, three of her sons: Carl Johnson, Chris Johnson, and Larry Jenkins; plus all eight of her siblings: Rosetta Atkinson, Elizabeth Atkinson, Ethel McDonald, Ethel Williams, Sam Brooks, Leroy Young, Eugene Brooks, and Daniel Brooks. Left to cherish her memories are: her loving husband of 67 years, Tom Johnson; their daughter Lesia (Willie) McCarroll and son T.J. (Carolyn) Johnson, both of Wiggins, and a son Charles Fairley of Hurley. Gussie leaves a legacy of twenty-six grandchildren, with a host of great-grands, extended family, friends and co-workers through the years. Her final wishes were to be cremated, which her family is honoring. A celebration of her life is set for Saturday, February 10th at New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church in Bond at 1:00 PM. All who knew and loved Aunt Gussie are welcome to come remember this special lady. Afterward, the repast will be at Leisa and Willie McCarroll's residence. Trinity Funeral Services is honored to serve the Johnson family in their time of need and asks that you remember them in your thoughts and prayers through the days ahead.
