Charles McKenzie Obituary

Charles Louis McKenzie, 71 , passed away on May 29, 2023 at his home at in Perkinston. Charles was born on August 04, 1951 in New Orleans, LA, the youngest of three children James Kratzer and Lillian (Bing) McKenzie. He grew up in the Big Easy and enjoyed fishing, music, and writing. He never missed a chance to go fishing, and enjoyed writing poetry. Charlie has written no telling how many poems through the years, and even had one published in The Times Picayune when he was 12. His love of oldies and blues music began at an early age as well. Charlie would sing on the street corner with groups of his friends, he and Susie formed Moma Joma Music Karaoke and would later form the Second Chance band along the way. He attended school in New Orleans, graduating from L.E. Rabouin with the Class of 1969. From there, he joined the US Marine Corps Reserves and served for 2 years before deciding to go active duty with the US Air Force, serving as an MP, or Security Police Officer. After his discharge from military service, Chaz spent his career in law enforcement for the most part. In 1979, he began his career as an officer with the Myrtle Beach PD before returning home to New Orleans. There, Chaz worked with the Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff's Dept. as a canine officer. He spent time with a couple other departments through the years, winning the USPCA Grand National championship in 1992. Dec. 2, 1992 was named after Chaz and his partner, Brenda for their accomplishments. Chaz earned many awards and accolades in his years in law enforcement, working his final stint for the Stone County SO as a Captain. From there, he dabbled some at the casinos and finally settled in as a pawn broker at Friendly Pawn in Saucier. Favorite past-times include just spending time with Susie. He enoyed music and singing with bands and karaoke, especially in places where they had never been, once singing with Fats Domino and Johnny Williams, an original Drifter. Now Chaz has been "mistaken" as a few people through the years, even provided a few autographs to boot. Those include Stone Cold Steve Austin, Jessie Ventura, and even Pete Fountain. Over the years, Chaz and Susie have sang in over 90 locations in at least five states. He was a devoted husband and trusted friend to many. Preceded in death by Lillian McKenzie (Mother), James McKenzie (Father), Denise Smith (Daughter) Charles is survived by his wife of 25 years Susie Georgeann McKenzie (Bobinger); Sister Jewel McKenzie; children, Shea Williamson, Amanda Featherston, and Jason Hall.
