Obituary

Wanda J. Finnegan, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on February 8, 2026, at home in Saucier, MS, at the age of 81. Born on October 24, 1944, in Newton, MS. Wanda preceded in death by her beloved husband; John Albert Finnegan Jr. Wanda touched the lives of many throughout her vibrant journey.

Wanda's early life was marked by dedication and hard work.  She attended Newton County High School, where she was recognized as Most Athletic in her Junior and Senior years. She continued her education at Jones County Junior College, where she showcased her athletic skills by playing basketball, tennis, and running track. Throughout her career, she worked various jobs, ultimately finding her passion in law enforcement as a deputy for the Harrison County Sheriffs Department, where she retired as a Sergeant with the Transport Division. Her service in the sheriff's department was a source of immense pride for her, reflecting her commitment to public service and the community she loved. 

Wanda was known for her remarkable ability to light up a room with her presence.  Her infections spirit and love for life made her a cherished member of her family and community.  She was particularly devoted to her family, always ensuring that they had what they needed and were well cared for. Wanda was known for offering unwavering support, encouragement, and love to her children, grandchildren, and extended family. Wanda was a pillar of strength during difficult times, notably stepping up as a caregiver for her husband, John A. Finnegan Jr., who bravely battled cancer during their 40 years of marriage. 

A deeply spiritual woman, Wanda loved our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and held her faith close to her heart. Wanda made it a daily practice to read her Bible and pray, drawing strength and guidance from her faith. As a member of the Pentecostals of the Gulf Coast Church since 2013, she embraced her spiritual community and shared her faith with those around her.

Wanda's legacy lives on through her loving family, including her daughter Carla (Scott) Mayfield, son, Julius Hugh Hopper, IV, son, Jeffrey Bradford Hopper, and daughter, Elizabeth Carol Finnegan. Wanda is also survived by her grandchildren, Joshua Mayfield, Nicholas (Elizabeth) Seymour, Mason (Brianna) Hopper, John Riley Hopper, Kayleigh (Jacob) Anderson, Lauren (Jace) Richards, Jasmine (Ryhem) Perron, Trae Perron, Rusty (Alexis) Finnegan, Ty Finnegan, five great grandchildren, sister, Patricia Casek and many extended family members. 

Wanda joined her beloved husband John Albert Finnegan, Jr., her mother, Bernice Dew Smith, her father, Eugene Parks Munn, mother-in-law, Doris LaNell Finnegan, and her father-in-law JA Finnegan Sr. in everlasting peace, her spirit will continue to inspire all who knew and loved her.  Wanda J. Finnegan will always be remembered for her resilience, warmth, and love for her family. 

Though accomplished in many areas, Wanda's greatest love and proudest achievement was her family. Her selflessness, strength, and dedication will be remembered by all who knew her.

There will be a grave side service at Hopewell Methodist Church, 2852 County Road 20, Rose Hill, MS, 39356, Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 11:00.
