Victor Lamar Gilner, 62 of Gulfport, passed away Wednesday, July 25th at Canon Hospice in Gulfport. Victor Lamar Gilner was born on February 8, 1956 in Wiggins, Mississippi to the late Bobby N. Gilner & Ella Mae Taylor Gilner. He was the first born of three children. Victor attended Locker Elementary School, 28th Street Elementary School, East Jr. High School, and graduated from Gulfport High School in 1974. Under the Hall of Fame Coach, the late Bert Jenkins, Victor played basketball where he was a "Three Year Starter," and earned the titles of "All District - 3 Years; "All State" and he also played in the Mississippi High School All Star Basketball Game in 1974. He signed a full scholarship with Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Victor later attended Jackson State University, and also attended Mississippi Baptist Seminary and Bible College in Jackson, Mississippi, where he obtained a Bachelor's degree in Christian Education. During his early years, Victor first attended Welcome Hill Baptist Church in Wiggins, Mississippi (where he was baptized at the age of 8 years), and Mount Bethel Baptist Church in Gulfport, Mississippi. During his adulthood, Victor attended New Mount Zion Baptist Church where he became an ordained minister under the late Rev. Dr. Leon Bell. He served as Assistant Pastor and also worked in the Evangelistic/Outreach Ministry. Victor held several jobs during his career including accounting, security, insurance agent and worked as a technician at the General Electrical Company. During his past time, he enjoyed cooking, sports, and reading. Victor had a special relationship with his former wife, Minister Delia, who (during their years of marriage) had been a great influence to him in the ministry. Victor was preceded in death by his wife, Albersteen Myles. Victor leaves to cherish his memories, One Brother: Bobby Ray Gilner (Ann) of Decatur, Georgia; One Sister: Renee Gilner-Crenshaw of Decatur, Georgia; Nephews: Bobby L. Gilner and T.J. Harvey; Great-Nephews: Ronmon Holmes, Jr., Rashad Holmes, Timothy Barron, Jr. and Omar Turner Harvey; Neices: Raysha Harvey, Shawna Harvey, Angellica Gilner, and Arianna Gilner; Great Nieces: Raven Holmes and Aniya Callahan; Great-Great Niece: Rayshiya Holmes, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Victor will truly be missed by all those who loved him... but we know that God loved him best... And "to be absent from this body is to be present with the Lord." Rest in Peace, Victor!
