Vernon Irene Cox Sterling, 74, of Lumberton passed away August 4, 2020 in Hattiesburg at Forrest General Hospital. Irene was born to Vernon and Delia (Rutledge) Cox on December 2, 1945 in Lumberton, MS. She is preceded in death by her parents, brother, Henry Cox and infant sister. Irene leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband of 59 years, Mike Sterling, children, Kim Burge, Michael Sterling, Clay Sterling and Susie (Greg) Piercy; grandchildren, Mandy (Ronnie), Megan, Chris, Cody, Noah, Mackenzie and Luke; great-grands, Joey and Jaxon; along with extended family and friends. Irene will be remembered as everyone’s mom. She was a band mom for many, many years and kept everyone in line. She was a wonderful seamstress, homemaker and cook. Her family will always fondly remember her fried chicken and chocolate cake. She was more than a mom, she was her children’s friend and protector, there wasn’t anything that she would not do for her family. Irene leaves a behind many wonderful memories for us to cherish until we meet again. A graveside service will take place on Saturday, August 8 at 10 am at Talowah Cemetery. Trinity Funeral Services is honored to be entrusted with the care of Ms. Irene and asks that you keep her family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
