Tommie Jean Welborn

Tommie Jean Welborn, 88, passed away February 11, 2023 at South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel. She was born November 15, 1934 in Laurel, the daughter and youngest of three children to Tom Hicks and Martha (Brownlee) Holifield. Tommie grew up in both Wayne and Jones counties in the latter half of the Great Depression, where she learned the true value of a dollar. She learned to cook, sew, quilt, garden, and much more. Tommie spent her career taking care of her children and the family home, raising five boys and one girl along the way. Whatever the kids were doing, she was there to support them. The boys all played baseball and Tommie became a pretty big baseball fan as well, with the St. Louis Cardinals her favorite MLB team. She is remembered as a wonderful, loving mother that loved to laugh. Tommie enjoyed a good joke as much as anyone, and was also known to pull a good prank along the way as well. She was a Christian by faith and member at Sandersville Baptist Church, and boy could she cook. Her chicken and dumplings, beef roast with all the fixins, and all the holiday things she would make will surely be missed. In her spare time, Tommie enjoyed her grandchildren and travelling to the Smokey Mountains. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who will be dearly missed by all whose life she touched. Tomie was preceded by her parents, Tom and Martha Holifield; her sisters, Eunice Thompson and Katherine Blackledge; her first husband of twenty-six years, John K. Dunston, and her second husband, Oscar Welborn; and two sons, Johnny (Sandra) Dunston and Tom Dunston. Left to cherish her memories are: her children: sons Wayne (Mona), Gary (Carolyn), and Glen Dunston, with her daughter Debbie (Edward) Dool, all of Sandersville. She had a host of grand and great-grandchildren, all of who she loved dearly, along with numerous extended family and friends through the years. Her final wishes were to be cremated, which the family honored.
