Mr. Sylvester Lee Nelson

Mr. Sylvester Lee Nelson, 76 of Hattiesburg, departed this life February 5th in River Ridge, LA. Sylvester was one of eighteen children, born to the late Reverend George and Mary Ruth Nelson, Sr. on the 22nd day of July 1942 in Gulfport, MS. He attended and completed his education at Locker High School in Wiggins, Ms. Immediately following, he joined the United States Army, where he served honorably, including duty in Korea. After his military service, Sylvester went to work at Avondale Shipyard as a welder, where he remained until his retirement. He was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Laura Nelson. Growing up in church, he loved to sing gospel hymns and music, and shared his talent singing with various groups, and touring local areas. He will be fondly remembered, and sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Sylvester was preceded in death by his son, Ricky Nelson; parents Rev. George and Mary Nelson; four sisters; Bertha Ruth Gibbs, Thelma Alford, Dorothy Nelson, and Ruth Anderson; six brothers; Richard Nelson, Robert Nelson, James Nelson, Dave Nelson, and Leo Nelson. He leaves to cherish his memories: his son, Fred Nelson of Dallas, TX; sisters Edna Thompson, Peggy Jackson, and Betty Phillips, all of New Orleans, LA, and Mary Alice Nelson, of Perkinston, MS; brothers: Howard Nelson of Tulsa, OK, Cecil Nelson of Dallas, TX, and Leon Nelson of New Orleans, LA and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 9, 2019 at Mt. Avery Baptist Church in Perkinston. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, with the funeral service set for 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
