Steve Shelby Sumrall, 65 of Hattiesburg, passed away April 22nd at Forrest General Hospital. Steve was the son and baby of 5 children to Marvin & Lena (Ware) Sumrall. Born May 11, 1954 in Hattiesburg, he grew up in the Pine Belt and came to love wrestling, USM and N.O. Saints football. In his younger years, he worked at a few places, including some fast food restaurants and Coca-Cola. Eventually he went to work for Southern Hens where he stayed for 25 years until his retirement in 2017. Steve had a bodacious appetite for most anything good to eat, especially junk food. He was, to say it mildly, unique in his own way. A quiet, easy going type of guy, he was the kind that you couldn't upset easily. Steve had a tender heart, which showed through as he watched sappy shows on tv that often brought tears to his eyes. He had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening, even flowers in the yard which most men do not. He also enjoyed square dancing and could do-se-do with the best of them. A member of 19th Avenue Baptist Church, he always helped with the men's breakfasts and served where he was needed. He could be somewhat stubborn according to those who knew him best, but he is remembered as a great husband, father and friend that will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all whose life he touched. He was preceded by his parents; sisters Marie and Marleen Sumrall; his brother Charles Tony and a great-grandson, Gabriel Sumrall. Left to cherish the many fond memories are: his loving wife Judy; their children: Kathy Sumrall (Jeff Lawsett) of Poplarville, Tina (Jason) Seal of Bogalusa, LA, Stephanie Sumrall (Tim Leslie) of Picayune, Jessica (Lavette) Miller of Sumrall, Kayla (Marcus) Mathis of Collins, Richard (McKayla) Chambliss of Lumberton and Lakin Chambliss of Hattiesburg; with one brother, Cecil Toney of Magee. His legacy includes twenty-four grandchildren, four great-grands, along with numerous extended family, friends and neighbors through the years. Steve's final wishes were to be cremated, which his family is honoring. A celebration of his life will be set for a later date. Trinity Funeral Services is honored to serve the Sumrall family in their time of need and asks everyone to keep them lifted up in your prayers during this trying time.
