Shon Joseph Peterson, 55, passed away October 13th, 2022 at Singing River Hospital in Gulfport. He was born September 24, 1967 in Gulfport, MS the oldest of five children born to Oscar Joseph, III and Ella Mae (Ladner) Peterson. Shon grew up in the Necaise community in rural Hancock county. Growing up with his two brothers in the country, the trio spent lots of time outdoors. Playing basketball, riding their bikes, fishing, and a good game of hide-and-seek were just a few of the things they enjoyed. He graduated from Hancock North Central High School with the Class of 1985. From there, Shon went on to Pearl River Community College, continuing to USM in Hattiesburg, studying business along the way. He would utilize that course work in the family businesses, which included Peterson's Grocery on Hwy. 603, a video store, and a bait and tackle shop as well. Shon was athletic and outgoing, playing basketball and tennis in his spare time, plus including collecting sports memorabilia. He was a huge Michael Jordan fan, and played guitar and saxophone, and was actually part of a band with some of his friends for some time. They stayed pretty active and played quite a bit around South MS. Shon was a loving, family oriented person. He knew everyone's birthdays, looking forward to the annual holiday gatherings. Shon also had several aquariums, both fresh and salt water types, with all sorts of fish and things in them. Since he didn't have children of his own, he spent lots of time with his nieces and nephews, taking them places and to do things, such as their first music concerts and much more. Shon was always trying to lighten things up and keep you smiling and laughing. While he had his share of struggles over the past few years, he did his best to remain upbeat and positive through it all. He will be sadly missed by all whose life he touched. He was preceded by his maternal grandparents, Rush and Adris Ladner, and paternal grandparents Oscar J. and Elodie Peterson, II, with two baby sisters, Tamela and Angela Peterson. Left to cherish his memories are: his mother Ella Higgins of Picayune, his father Oscar "O.J." Peterson, III, and his two brothers, Ryan (Tammy) and Brett Peterson, all of Necaise. His nieces and nephews whom he loved as his own: Kelsey and Kilee Peterson, Ty Peterson, Cory Rogers, Blaine Dillard, and Gage Johnson, along with numerous extended family and friends. Services are set for Saturday, October 22nd, at St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church in Necaise. Visitation will begin at 10 AM, followed by the funeral mass at noon. Afterward, Shon will be laid to rest in the Necaise Cemetery. Trinity Funeral Services is honored to serve the Peterson family in their time of need, and asks that you remember them in your thoughts and prayers through this trying time.
