Monroe Randy Walker, passed away on October 12th at Memorial in Gulfport. Monroe was born on May 24, 1941, in Pin Oak, WV, the oldest of three to parents Stanley Monroe and Mary Arlene (Mills) Walker. He spent the first thirteen years there in Pin Oak while his father worked in the coal mines, and later moved to Mississippi City to work as a heavy equipment mechanic. He enjoyed the outdoors and sports, playing basketball, golf, and bowling. Monroe also enjoyed throwing horseshoes and playing checkers, he was a very competitive person that excelled at most anything he did. He dropped out of high school to help support his mother, then went to work at National Food Store. Monroe started as a bag boy, later moving into the produce department. Over the next couple of years, he was promoted up rather quickly due to his hard work and dedication. From bagging groceries, he became the store manager in just under four years. Monroe would spend the next thirty years in grocery store management, for National, Piggly Wiggly, Greers, Food for Less and more, across South MS, Louisiana, and Texas until his retirement in the mid 90s. But Monroe didn't stop there. He spent a few years working in construction with his family, spent some time working security, and even worked for Stone County for a couple of years, and all the while, would volunteer at Garden Park Hospital at least one full day a week. His family finally convinced him to completely retire in January 2022. He is remembered as an active, outgoing man that was always busy. Never one to sit around, Monroe was always moving and doing something. When he wasn't working, he enjoyed playing solitaire and watching Gunsmoke or Blue Bloods on television. A Christian by faith, Monroe was a faithful member at Berean Baptist Church for many years. For the longest time, Monroe and Linda kept the grass cut and served the church faithfully. He loved his Sunday School class and always read and studied the lesson every week. A loving brother, husband, father and grandfather, he will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Preceded by his parents, Stanley and Mary Walker, his sister Deanna Davis, and her husband Jim. Left to cherish his memories are, his loving wife and soul mate for over sixty years, Linda; their three children: daughters Teresa Akin (Billy Riels) of Big Level and Sherri (Jeff) Gill of Wiggins, with their son David (Charelle) Walker of Hattiesburg; his brother Lester (Cheryl) Walker of Gulfport. He leaves a legacy of six grandchildren: Meagan (J.P.) Gatuso, Lauren (Josh) Cook, David, II (Faerron) Walker, Daphnye (Josh) Ross, Danielle (Colton) Williams, and Justin Gill, ten great-grands: Gabby, Jayden, Sean, Archer, Eagan, Aurora "Monroe", Cason, Layla, Jase, and Josie, along with numerous extended family, friends, and untold customers through the years. His final wishes were to be cremated, which his family is honoring. A celebration of his life will be held October 22, at Berean Baptist church on Hwy 49 in Wiggins, at 2:00pm with food following. Trinity Funeral Services is honored to serve the Walker family in their time of need and asks that you remember them in your thoughts and prayers over the coming days.
