Gulfport

Michael Joseph Slade, 55, passed away on December 14, 2023, in Gulfport, MS. Born on March 21, 1968, in Biloxi to Norma Slade Whisenant. Michael's early years were spent in Cleveland, Ohio, where he embraced the spirit of adventure and exploration. His wanderlust led him through the scenic landscapes of Florida, Tennessee, and several other states, enriching his life with diverse experiences. However, it was the Mississippi coast that called him back, and it was there, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, that he met Vanessa Rodriguez, the best friend and love of his life. Michael was known as one of the best dealers in the casino industry, charming guests and colleagues alike across the Gulf Coast, but his skills extended beyond the gaming tables. He was also a licensed underwater welder in Florida, proving his strength and determination in the face of challenging environments. A die-hard New Orleans Saints fan, he also had a passion for working on cars and trucks, always eager to tinker and improve. His creativity knew no bounds, whether he was building something from scratch or bringing images to life with his detailed pencil drawings. Each piece was a labor of love, hours poured into capturing all the beauty he could think of. Beyond his artistic and mechanical talents, Michael was an expert at unearthing flounder, and he enjoyed cooking his catch and sharing it with his family, often followed by the sweet treat of wedding cake snowballs. He was the jokester of the bunch, always ready with a wisecrack or a prank to lighten the mood and bring smiles to the faces of his family and friends. His laughter was infectious, and his presence could brighten the darkest of days. Left to cherish his memories are his son, Lucas Andrews; mother, Norma Whisenant; siblings, Rachael Whisenant, Lauren Popovich, and Kyra Demore; beloved grandchildren, Jax and Lydia Andrews; and his niece and nephews, Maisie Miller, Silas Miller, and Dax Whisenant; and a friend that was more like a brother, Greg Sison. Michael was preceded in death by his best friend and love of his life, Vanessa Rodriguez; his father, Joseph Popovich; and his stepfather, Roger Whisenant. Trinity Funeral Services is honored to serve the Slade and Whisenant families in their time of need and asks that you remember them in your thoughts and prayers through the days ahead.
