Luzenia Camelia (Ladner) Cuevas

September 1, 1929 — August 19, 2021

Pass Christian, MS

Ms. Luzenia Camelia Cuevas spent the better part of 91 years working hard and taking care of those around her. She entered her eternal rest Thursday afternoon, August 19th at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Luzenia was the second of four children to George, Sr. and Cora Camelia (Cuevas) Ladner. She was born September 1, 1929 at the family home in Lizana, right at the start of the Great Depression. Growing up during that era shaped Luzenia's life. Times were hard as they say and families grew and processed most everything they ate. Growing up in Lizana on the small  family farm, she was a bona fide country girl who worked in the garden and helped with all the animals, including cows, hogs, chickens and horses. That took care of vegetables and beef, chicken and pork but they also grew sugar cane and had bee hives, making their own syrup and honey. There wasn't much that 'Sis', as she came to be known, couldn't do. She attended Lizana school up until she got married, just three months before graduating high school. Buren Cuevas swept her off her feet and they made their home in the Dubisson community, spending their lives there. Sis continued to work and do all the things that stuck with her from childhood. She worked as a school bus driver for many years, as well as sewing at Stuffed Shirt along the way. Sis is fondly remembered as a simply wonderful woman that literally did her best to take care of everyone around her. Loving and sweet are far short of completely describing her, until you crossed her anyway. You absolutely did not want to do that! She loved to fish, go crabbing and take care of her chickens and biddies, but when she wasn't doing that, you might even find her on the tractor! You could rest assured she was going to be doing something, as long as she was able. And cook, well let's just say there wasn't anything she couldn't cook! Sis loved her family, especially those grandchildren. She has definitely earned her rest, but she will be forever loved and missed by so many. She was preceded by her parents, George & Cora Ladner, Sr., and her brothers George, Jr. and Wilton Ladner; the love of her life and husband, Buren Cuevas, and their daughter Marilyn Dedeaux. Left to cherish the many fond memories are: her sister Voetress Breazeale of Gulfport; two grandchildren: Jeffery (Vanessa) Dedeaux of Pass Christian and Chelsa (PJ) Rivers of McHenry; her niece/daughter, Regina (Travis) Cuevas of Lizana, along with twelve great-grands, i great-great-grand and numerous extended family, friends and neighbors, most of which called her "Granny". Services are set for Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at Trinity Funeral Services in McHenry. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM, followed by a chapel service at 3:00 with Eld. Billy Reyer officiating. Afterward, she will be laid to rest in the Wolf River Cemetery.
