Mr. Leon "Wedge" Wedgeworth, known affectionately as Papa to his loved ones, passed away on October 1, 2024, at the age of 81, in Prattville, Alabama, due to complications from Parkinson's Disease. Born in Saucier, Mississippi, on November 28, 1942, to the late Doss and Ruby Wedgeworth, Leon was a cherished brother, a loving father, a proud grandfather, and great-grandfather. His early life in Saucier was filled with the hustle and bustle of a large and loving family. After attending Perkinston High School, Leon answered the call of duty and became a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, the Marine Corps Reserves, and the Air Force Reserves where he retired after earning the rank of Master Sargent. After retiring from the military, he continued to serve his community as an alarm technician, electrician, locksmith, and maintenance man, always ready to lend a helping hand.
Preceding him in death are his three brothers, Robert Wedgeworth, Dolphas Wedgeworth, and Ross Wedgeworth, and seven sisters, Doris Prospt, Ruth Greeley, Joyce Saul, Elizabeth Warden, Lilly Torries, Jane Loper, and Faye Wedgeworth. He is survived by his loving daughters, Amanda Collier (Wade) of Columbus, Georgia, and Jennifer Monk (James) of Prattville, Alabama. Leon's joy was multiplied with the birth of his grandchildren, Tristan Collier (Amanda), Sydney Fraizer (Caleb), McKenzie Monk, and James Braxton Monk, and his great-grandchildren, Gunner Griffin Newsome, Kennedy Marie Collier, and River Anne Collier, who will carry forward his spirit of love and compassion. His sisters Myrtle Woodward, Ernestine Thompson (Paul), and Virginia Butler (Billy) will remember their brother with hearts full of cherished memories.
Leon's ability to fix anything that was broken earned him the admiration of all who knew him. His hands, strong and sure, worked tirelessly not only to repair what was damaged but also to build bonds of trust and reliability within his community. His generosity extended beyond his family, as he was always ready to help others in any way possible. He was a man of great integrity and kindness, who always placed the needs of others before his own. He had a love for sitting in the sun and afforded every opportunity given to spending time with his children and grandchildren, teaching them the value of hard work, the importance of kindness, and the joy of living a life filled with purpose. As we bid farewell to Leon "Wedge" Wedgeworth, we celebrate a life lived to the fullest, marked by unwavering commitment to his family and the many lives he touched. We honor the memory of Mr. Wedgeworth and cherish the time we were lucky enough to share with him. His journey on earth has come to a close, but his influence will endure forever in the hearts of those who loved him. Rest in peace, dear “Papa”, until we meet again.
Trinity Funeral Services is honored to serve the Wedgeworth family in their time of need and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers through the days to come.
