Ms. Julia Mae Smalls, 64 of Darlington, SC, passed away Monday, April 23rd in Flora, MS. Julia was born April 28, 1953 in Florence, SC, one of eight children to James A. Sr. and Sadie Mae Cooper Smalls. She grew to be a kind, helping, and generous young lady who kept those traits her entire life. Julia was a faithful member of Majority Missionary Baptist Church in Florence, and loved gospel music, sings and other church programs, rarely missing a one. She loved to cook, and is remembered for having delicious dinners with a fresh cake on the table, ready for family and friends to enjoy every Sunday at 2pm. You would find such delicacies as sweet potato bread, fried chicken, catfish stew for the adults with hot dogs and chips for the kids, and much more on her table. Julia is remembered as a kind and loving mother who kept a spotless house and food on the table for her family. A generous, helpful neighbor and friend, who never had a bad word to say of anyone. She will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded by her parents, one sister, Azalee Matthews, and two brothers, James A. Smalls, Jr., and John H. Smalls. Left to cherish her memories are her five children: Karen M. (Jesse) Smalls of Charlotte, NC, Latosha I. Smalls of Fayetteville, NC, Robert L. Smalls of Pearl, Christina (Charles) Smalls-Thames of Flora, and Latonya Smalls of Jackson; sisters Juanita McCall of GA, Gloria Flynn and Geraldine Smalls, both of Florence, SC, and a brother, David Smalls of Darlington, SC; nine grandchildren, four great-grands, a very special cousin and best friend, Margaret Cooper, whom she was with or spoke to most every day, a very special grandson, Tyrese R. Dubose, numerous nieces and nephews, plus a host of friends and neighbors. She will be returned to South Carolina, where a memorial service and celebration of her life will be held at Ideal Funeral Parlor, 106 E. Darlington St. in Florence, on Saturday, May 12th at 1:00 PM. Trinity Funeral Services is honored to serve the Smalls family here in MS, and asks that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers over these trying days.
