Joyce Rachel (Whittington) Walters

August 7, 1946 — May 26, 2020

Wiggins, MS

Joyce Rachel Walters, 73 of Wiggins, passed away Tuesday May 26th at her home. Joyce was born at her family's home in the Ramsey Springs community, on August 7, 1946. She was the daughter and tenth of fifteen children to Otto & Elner (Crawford) Whittington. She grew up on her family's dairy farm, attending Home Vocational School in Big Level. Joyce met Elias Walters, known by most as "Blue". They were married in the early 60s, making their home in Ramsey Springs for several years before moving to Wiggins. She enjoyed her flower gardens when outside, but inside Joyce loved to quilt and made so many over the years for family and friends. Her true passion though was travelling. Over her life, she visited 48 of our 50 states, making many memories along the way. Joyce was a strong willed and hard working woman, very "straight-forward" with anyone, which some might have mistook. She was definitely firm, but you knew your boundaries with Joyce. On top of all that, she had the biggest heart of all, opening her home to literally anyone. She was a Christian woman, attending Landmark Memorial Missionary Baptist Church in Wiggins for over 50 years. A loving, giving daughter, wife, mother and friend, she will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. Joyce was preceded by her parents, Otto & Elner Whittington; her husband Elias "Blue" Walters; two of their children, a son W.C. and a daughter Glenda Faye Walters; son-in-law Johnny Rouse and her grandson, J.C. Rouse; siblings: brothers William, Urschel, Cecil and Hoyt, and sisters Weida Ginn, Angelina Strickland, Melba Syverson, Larina Broadus, and Gwen Odom. Left to cherish her memories are: her daughters Lafreda (Randy) Scarbrough of Perk, Carolyn Rouse of Moss Point, and Anita Kay (Robert) Raborn of Wiggins, with a bonus son, James (Sherry) Bond of Gulfport; her siblings: Willamae Vincent of Madisonville, LA, Elaine Breland of Florence, MS, Hardy (Mary) Whittington and Tony (Mable) Whittington, both of Ramsey Springs, and June Voigt of Conner, TX. She leaves a legacy of ten grandchildren: Molly Raborn, Natasha (Chad) Wolfe, Matilda (TJ) Fields, Randy (Jamie) Scarbrough, Jonathon Rouse, Rachel Guidry, Dee Rouse, Ashley (David) McKay, Andrew Bond and Angie Rouse, along with ten great-grands: Shawn-Maree Wolfe, Noah and Aden Tidwell, Ryan Wolfe, Kyleigh and Kaidance Scarbrough, Orion, Joseph and Caitlyn Guidry, and Isia Bond, and countless friends and neighbors through the years. The family has set a graveside service for 10:00 AM Thursday morning, May 28th at the Walters Memorial Cemetery in Wiggins.
