Johnny Glen Banks, 90, passed away in his home surrounded by family on Tuesday, December 06, 2022. Born to Sanford and Ida Mae (Cunningham) Banks on March 12, 1932 in Fenton, MS. Johnny grew up in the Fenton area where he was known to be one of the best baseball players in his community. Mr. Banks worked at Ingalls shipyard in the sheet metal department and was a school board member for Hancock County for many years. In his 90 years of life, he accomplished and enjoyed so many things; from fishing and deer hunting to the occasional moonshining and being the keeper of time. Punctuality was something he took seriously along with his very important job as a “Supervisor”. Up to the very end, he always made sure to pull up a chair and supervise whatever task was being worked on. But his most prized hobby was his ability to bring even a tree stump to life. He had the greenest of green thumbs, from growing beautiful gardens to his luscious potted plants and all the in-betweens. Johnny always tended to his chickens, feeding them in his carport and accidentally letting one in the house overnight letting his family egg hunt the next morning. In all off Mississippi he may just be the best fried shrimp and catfish cook around, no one could dare compete. Johnny was “picker’” picking on everyone, the jokester of the family, and always making everyone laugh. But jokes aside he was the most caring and loving man you could have ever met. Johnny will be missed dearly by his friends and family. Left to cherish his memories are four of his children, Tina (Danny) Ladner, Sammy (Charolette) Banks, Gail Ward, and Myra (Dave Longley) Shorter; one sister, Ida Ratcliff; sixteen grandchildren, twenty-eight plus one on the way great grandchildren, and numerous great great grandchildren; along with many nieces and nephews. Johnny is preceded by his high school sweetheart of 75 years, Nelsie Banks; parents, Sanford and Ida Mae Banks; one daughter, Brenda Whitfield; and five siblings, Harold Banks, Sam Banks, Alvah Banks, Wilma “Sis’ Beach, and Margaret “Tiny” Carrier. The family of Mr. Johnny would like to give a special thank you to Canon Hospice, especially his nurse, Erica Ledford; Chaplain Craig Ladner; and his aide Kealen Beavers.
