Johnie B (Ladner) Dubose

April 16, 1925 — July 2, 2022

Hattiesburg

Johnie B. Dubose, 97 of Lumberton, entered her well-deserved eternal rest July 02, 2022, at Asbury Hospice House in Hattiesburg. Born April 16, 1925 in Hattiesburg, she was the daughter and one of ten children to Jeremiah J. and Hattie Agnes (Tyner) Ladner. Originally from Poplarville, the family moved to Mobile, AL when Johnie was very young. Growing up through the Great Depression, some of her earliest memories were of helping her mother make biscuits, and handing them out daily through their kitchen window to those who were in need. The family returned to Poplarville where Johnie attended Poplarville schools, graduating with the Class of 1942. She went on to Pearl River Jr. College with a goal of becoming a teacher. While there, she was a member of the String of Pearls dance team in 1942 and 43. Johnie married Darnell Thomas and made their home in Butler, AL., where she opened her own kindergarten. They moved around some while Darnell worked in the oil fields, eventually making their way back to Poplarville, and finally to Lumberton when he went to work for Hess. Johnie later married Jake Dubose, and they ran the Gulf station in Lumberton, along with another station in Lucedale, which also had a restaurant with it. They made the trip from Lumberton to Lucedale on an almost daily basis for ten years or so before retiring. Johnie was not one to just sit around, and was always busy doing something. She did all the research and leg work to start the Black Creek Shooting Reserve, the very first of it's kind in Mississippi, raising both quail and pheasant for hunts. Johnie did so much in her 97 years that to say she was a "lively" lady, is certainly a gross understatement. She is lovingly remembered as a very active, hard-working wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to so many. Johnie was also rambunctious, had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh, but she was also the "bell of the ball". Her deep Christian faith and love for the Lord showed in her life daily, always reading and studying her Bible. Helpful, considerate, and loving are just a couple of the many words used to describe her. Eager to help anyone, she has made prom dresses for girls who needed them, and fed no telling how many people through the years. As anyone who knew her would agree, you were always welcome at Ms. Johnie's house. A one-of-a-kind woman, she will definitely be missed by all whose life she touched. She was preceded by her parents, her husbands Darnell Thomas and David Dubose Sr.; all of her siblings: brothers Ted, Bud, Walt, and Preston, and sisters Hattie, Mary, Ilene, Riet, and Essie; one daughter Sandra Dewease; two sons Robert and David Dubose; four sons-in-law, Michael Lott, Buddy Lee, Rodney Jones, and Satch Molsbee, and her daughter-in-law, Debbie Dubose. She is survived by her daughters: Melanie Thomas-Lott of Hattiesburg and Bobbie Ann Molsbee of Lumberton; a daughter-in-law Glenda Dubose, also of Lumberton, and a son-in-law Elbert Dewease of Brooklyn. Johnie leaves a long legacy of sixteen grandchildren, thirty-two great-grandchildren, and seventeen great-great grands, along with untold numbers of extended family, friends and neighbors, students, customers, and more through the years. The family will receive friends for visitation Saturday, July 9, 2022 at Trinity Funeral Services in Lumberton, beginning at 12:00 PM. A chapel service will begin at 1:00 PM with Rev. Tommy Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Rousefield Cemetery in Lumberton.
