John W. Peterson

John Willard Peterson, affectionately known as Johnny, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2026, in Poplarville. Born on February 10, 1939, in Gulfport, his journey through life touched the hearts of many and left an enduring legacy of kindness, hard work, and genuine affection for family and community.

Johnny was a man who lived simply but gave abundantly. His childhood in Steep Hollow blossomed into a life rooted in strong values and enduring friendships. He graduated from Sellers High School and continued his studies at Pearl River Community College, earning a bachelor's degree in education—an early testament to his belief in perseverance and personal growth.

Johnny’s devotion to his country was evident when he was drafted into the Army, serving honorably for two years in Hawaii. His time in the service shaped his commitment to integrity and community—values he would carry with him throughout his life.

From a young age, Johnny found fulfillment in hard, honest work. He was a dedicated pipefitter on construction jobs, respected by colleagues and friends alike for his skill and reliability. Yet, he never let work overshadow the needs of those around him. Johnny peddled vegetables, and was known for his remarkable and quiet generosity—often giving his produce to those in need without fanfare or expectation of return. He was a longtime local farmer, and his reputation as someone you could always rely upon made him a beloved figure in his hometown.

A member of Steep Hollow Baptist Church, Johnny’s faith grounded him. The fellowship and sense of community he found there mirrored the warmth and inclusivity he so freely offered.

Though he had a passion for farming and planting, horses were his fascination and delight. His times training and helping with racehorses gave him countless hours of happiness, and the thrill of attending races brought him together with family and friends who shared his love for the sport.

Johnny will be remembered with deep affection by his surviving siblings: Elizabeth Dedeaux, Daniel Peterson (Mary Ann), Rudy Peterson (Terri), Rachel Overstreet, and Judy Speirs (Audie). His lifelong friend, Guy Paige, shares in the many memories of laughter, camaraderie, and mutual respect built over the years. Johnny was preceded in death by his loving parents, Willard Peterson and Annie Smith Peterson, and cherished brothers David Wallace Peterson, James Robert Peterson, and Larry Joseph Peterson; nephew Warren Dedeaux; nieces Kimberly Ladner and Kara Cuevas; and an angel nephew and niece. 

To those blessed to know him, Johnny was always happy—a bright and positive presence who never turned away someone in need. His generosity was legendary; he would help anybody with anything, never hesitating to offer a hand, a listening ear, or a smile. Above all, he loved his family and friends dearly, and his love remains the most precious gift he leaves behind.

A burial service will be held at Smith Family Cemetery, Barth Road, Poplarville, MS 39470, on August 26, 2026, at 10:00 AM. As family and friends gather on that morning, they will surely remember a man whose happiness came from giving, whose life was rooted in kindness, and whose memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Rest gently, Johnny. You gave much and asked for little—and your light will shine on in the love and generosity you inspired.
