Joey Leon Ladner, 59, of the Necaise community, passed away March 9, 2021 at his home in Perkinston, MS. Joey was the oldest of six children, born September 10, 1961 in Donaldsonville, LA to Jimmy and Gwen (Bourgeois) Ladner. Joey entered this world the night Hurricane Carla made landfall on Louisiana, his parents evacuated and were fortunate enough to snag a ferry to Donaldsonville where she gave birth to her oldest child, which Joey hated being! Growing up in St. Almant, LA, he always complained with the duties of being the oldest child and often asked his momma, "Why can't Pernell do it!!". She would kindly answer, "Well son, that just comes with being the oldest." and Joey would huff and stomp off to do whatever it was she asked him to do. He was a jack of all trades, working as a radio DJ as well as a carpenter for several years. Growing up in a large family, whatever vehicle was at the end of the driveway when it was time to leave for work, that's what he would take. Now this vehicle may or may not have had enough gas left in it from the last person who drove it. Joey learned that the hard way, running out of gas early one morning at 2am leaving from his radio job. He called mom wondering why there was no gas in his vehicle, to which she kindly giggled, telling him she was going to start putting just five or so dollars worth in when she drove it, just as they did to her car! Needless to say, he didn't run out of gas anymore!! Joey always had a sense of humor growing up and enjoyed the company of his family and friends. Moving to Mississippi in his early twenties, he worked odd jobs here and there as a carpenter. For the last twenty years, Joey spent lots of his time taking care of and helping his dad. He was loved by his family and will be dearly missed by his momma and all who knew and loved him. Joey was preceded in death by his father, Jimmie Ladner; paternal grandparents Joseph and Sedonia (Cuevas) Ladner; maternal grandparents Acklin and Rosemary Bourgeois and his infant brother, Randall Ladner. Left to cherish his memories are: his loving mother, Gwen (Bourgeois) Shiyou; his children, Andy Ladner of Kiln, Rachel Ladner of PA, Joshua Ladner of Wiggins and Melissa of Perkinston, MS; his brothers, Pernell Ladner and Bradley (Charness) Ladner; sisters Angela (Earl) Ainsworth and Myrtis (Malcom) Ladner. He leaves a legacy of six grandchildren, along with numerous extended family and friends. A graveside service will be held Saturday, September 11, 2021 in the Necaise Cemetery, beginning at 10am, with Rev. Arthur Lee of Shiloh Baptist Church officiating. Trinity Funeral Services is honored to serve the Ladner family during this difficult time, asking that you join us in remembering them in prayer over the coming days.
