Joan Christine Ladner, 84 of the Necaise Crossing community, passed away Wednesday morning in Hattiesburg. She was born December 4, 1937 at the family home in rural Hancock county, the middle of three children to Chandler and Eula (Cuevas) Ladner. Joan grew up there in Necaise Crossing, through some tough times in the post-depression era where folks didn't have a whole lot, and most of what they had they grew themselves. So she quickly learned how to be frugal and stretch things further than they were meant to go. She was definitely a country girl that learned how to cook, sew, and take care of the family and home. Joan, or “Lunnie” as she was affectionately known by most, had a compassionate, caring heart about her and spent most of her time either at home or going to church. She attended the Seller's School through the eighth grade, marrying J.C. Ladner as a young teenager. The young couple made their home in Necaise crossing as well, spending their entire lives right there. Joan did some sewing for family and friends, cooked a lot and took care of not only her family, but anyone who needed it in the community. That was Joan, a lady with a strong Christian faith and a servant's heart. She was a faithful member at Crane Creek Baptist Church for many years, where she handled the church's card ministry for a long time. Joan loved the Lord and wanted to serve and share the gospel as far and wide as she could, often giving people their first Bible. In what little spare time she found, Joan enjoyed reading, doing search-a-word puzzles, and watching SEC / MSU sports and her Dallas Cowboys, unless The Walton's happened to be on that is. She was so much to so many in her family and beyond. A loving sister, wife, mother and grandmother, she said it best herself, "I want to be remembered as a person who loved the Lord, my family and also my extended family and church family. In other words, I loved everybody." If you knew Lunnie, you know that is spot on. While she enjoys a well-earned eternal rest with the Lord, she will be forever missed by all whose life she touched. Joan was preceded by her parents, Chandler and Eula Ladner, her sister Janice Bond, and her loving husband, J.C. Ladner. Left to cherish her memories are: her three children: daughters Tammy (Marcus) Cuevas of Hattiesburg and Pam (Jeff) Lott, with her son Ken (Ann) Ladner and her remaining brother, Shelby "Buddy" (Yvonne) Ladner, all of Necaise Crossing. Joan leaves a legacy of five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, with numerous extended family and countless friends and neighbors through the years. Services are set for Saturday, Jan. 22 in the sanctuary at Crane Creek Baptist Church. Visitation begins at 1:30 PM, followed by the funeral service at 3:00. Afterward, Joan will be laid to rest in the Necaise Cemetery. Trinity Funeral Services is honored to serve the Ladner family in their time of need and asks everyone to keep them in your thoughts and prayers through this trying time. In lieu of flowers, it would honor Lunnie greatly if you considered making a donation to the Louisiana Children’s Medical Center in her honor.
