Jewel Marie Ladner

October 18, 1941 — June 28, 2021

Steep Hollow, MS

Jewel Marie Ladner, 79 of Steep Hollow, joined her husband Buddy in heaven Monday, surrounded by her loving family. She was born October 18, 1941 at the family home in the Dedeaux community, one of five children to Rush Joseph and Adris Josephine (Ladner) Ladner. Jewel grew up in Dedeaux, a South MS country girl on a small family farm. As most in rural areas in that time, she was no stranger to gardening and raising vegetables, tending livestock and doing whatever needed to be done around the house. Outgoing and athletic, Jewel enjoyed basketball, playing for Hancock North Central while in school, graduating with the Class of 1960. She married Buddy in 1965 and they made their home in Steep Hollow. While he drove trucks, Jewel worked on the line as a finishing technician for Alcan Cable Co. in Bay St. Louis for more than 25 years. Once she left Alcan, Jewel focused on her garden and other things at home. She was more than proficient at growing tomatoes, preferring Better Boys to the other varieties out there. In addition to her garden Jewel was an apiarist, which most people in these parts call a beekeeper. She kept her bees happy with plenty of garden vegetables to pollenate and harvested the honey they produced on a regular basis. And if she found herself with some spare time on her hands, she enjoyed quilting and listening to Elvis music. While Buddy had his farm, cows and pigeons, Jewel had her garden, bees and butterflies, all of which kept both of them busy and happy for many many years. She is remembered as a loving sister, wife, mother and grandmother, devoted to her family and friends. Jewel worked hard through her life and is enjoying a well-earned and much deserved rest, with all those who have gone on before her. She was loved beyond measure by her family and friends and will be sadly missed by all whose life she touched. She was preceded by her parents, Rush and Adris Ladner; two brothers, Pyburn "Smokey" and Eugene Ladner, both of the Standard Dedeaux community, and just last week by her loving husband of over 56 years, Biser R. "Buddy" Ladner. Left to cherish the many fond memories are: her two children: Chad (Shelli) ladner and Dawn (Wayne) Odom, both of Steep Hollow, and her two sisters, Margie Ladner and Ella Higgins, both of Standard Dedeaux. Jewel leaves a legacy of five grandchildren: Jeret (Courtney) Howard, Coty (Rachel) Odom, Dusty (Chelsea) Ladner, Katelyn Ladner and Shyann Odom (Aaron Spillman); seven great-grands: Gracelynn, Aleeyah, Ronin, Nash, Ruby, Mia and Leland, along with several nieces, nephews, extended family and numerous friends and neighbors through the years. Services will be held Friday, July 2, 2021 at Community Baptist Church where she was a member. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, followed by the funeral service at 1:00 PM. Afterward she will be laid to rest beside Buddy in the family cemetery. Trinity Funeral Services is honored to serve the Ladner family in their time of need. Please keep Chad, Dawn and the entire family in your thoughts and prayers as they walk this deep valley.
