James Edward Skelton, 89, passed away on April 28, 2026 in Wiggins, MS. He was born on July 07, 1936 in Mount Sterling, AL to the late Fred James Skelton Sr. and Zaddie Shoemaker Skelton.

James Edward Skelton, a beloved father, friend, and one-of-a-kind soul, passed away leaving behind a legacy of laughter, love, and unforgettable memories. Born in Mount Sterling, James was raised in Butler, where he attended Choctaw County School and grew up surrounded by a close-knit family as one of six children—three boys and three girls.

A hardworking and driven man, James proudly owned and operated his own business, Service Master of the Gulf Coast, where he built not only a company but lasting relationships with those he served.

James had a deep love for the outdoors and found joy in life’s simple pleasures. Whether he was gardening, fishing, or hunting, he felt most at peace in nature. He especially loved listening for the call of the whip-poor-will echoing through his property, a sound that brought him comfort and contentment. He had a special bond with his hunting dogs and a genuine love for all animals.

Known for his quick wit and warm heart, James was truly one of a kind. He could make anyone laugh and carried a spirit that lit up every room he entered. His favorite saying, “Come on,” was often spoken with a smile, capturing his playful and easygoing nature. A man of many talents, he was also an incredible cook, known for making some of the best Southern meals around—and he never passed up dessert, often enjoying it first.

James was a sweet and generous soul who would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need. He loved people deeply, and in return, he was loved by many.

He will be remembered for his humor, kindness, and the simple, beautiful way he lived his life. James Edward Skelton will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

James is preceded by his parents, Fred and Zaddie Skelton, sisters, Shirley Olson, Carrie Cleveland, and Ruth Shoemaker. Left to cherish his memories is his loving wife, Mary Faile; children, James Dean (Anita Mae) Skelton, Laura Ellyn Peters, Thomas Wayne Peters Sr., Renee Richardson, and Rebecca Harper; grandchildren, Thomas Wayne Peters II, Sean “Jake” Jacob Peters, Daniel James Skelton, Darren Edward (Hailey) Skelton, and Mason Leon (Fabiana) Skelton; great-grandchildren, Hayden Skelton, Skylynn Skelton, Nolan Skelton, Oliver Skelton, Liliana Peters, Valor, Sheperd and Salem Gifford, Canyon, Foster and  Wilkes Jones, Marty and Shiloh Foster.
