Horace William Smith but known to most as “Billy" passed away on July 21, 2023. He was born in Laurel on July 15, 1961, to the late Horace Joseph Smith and Anna Smith. Born in Laurel but raised in Lumberton, Billy's journey was one of humble beginnings and unwavering spirit. His life epitomized the virtues of hard work, devotion to family, and a love for the simple joys of life. With a heart of gold, Billy tirelessly cared for his loved ones, always putting their needs first. He was a man of few words, yet his actions spoke volumes of his love and generosity. A fiercely loyal and tough guy, Billy would do anything for those he held dear. He lived life on his own terms, unapologetically and authentically. Marching to the beat of his own drum, Billy embraced a matter-of-fact attitude above all else. Billy's love for family was unparalleled, finding immense joy in their company. To him, being with loved ones was a cherished treasure beyond compare. May we carry his memory in our hearts, honoring his spirit by living with kindness, strength, and love. Billy Is survived by his loving children, Carry (Kenneth) McCulloch and Katie (Anthony) Morgan; grandchildren, Isabella Smith-Hollin and Maelea McCulloch; sisters, Jean (Monte) Hollingsworth, Nita (William) Lee, Maurice (David) Cabuag, and Doris Campbell; brothers, Tommy (Sonya) Campbell and Arthur (Polly) Smith, and Charles Gary (Linda) Campbell. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Billy is preceded by his parents, Horace Joseph Smith and Anna Sullivan, and his stepfather, Thomas Sullivan.
