Hazel Vurbeline McCord

Hazel Vurbeline McCord, 88, passed away on October 20, 2026, at Singing River Hospital in Gulfport, Mississippi. Born on January 11, 1938, in Trion, Georgia, to Thomas Levi and Willie Mae Ledford Romine, Hazel was a strong, independent, and hardworking woman whose life was defined by her love for family and her generous heart.

Hazel learned the value of hard work at a young age, working as a sharecropper in Georgia at just seven years old. She carried that work ethic throughout her life, overcoming challenges and even battling breast cancer twice while continuing to work with remarkable determination. Through her own hard work, she purchased two homes and worked tirelessly to give her family opportunities and comforts she never had growing up.

Above all, Hazel was a devoted mother and the beloved matriarch of her family. She treasured her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, always making time for them and welcoming them with open arms. Whether waiting on the porch for a family visit or standing there to watch them leave, she made sure those she loved knew how much they meant to her. Her kindness extended beyond family, as she regularly donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and was always willing to help others without expecting anything in return.

Though small in stature, Hazel had a mighty spirit, a sharp wit, and a wonderful sense of humor. She loved singing around the house, enjoying karaoke, spending time with loved ones, and driving fast in her beloved Ford Mustang. She will also be remembered for her delicious homemade scratch biscuits, made with the same love she poured into everything she did. Hazel's strength, laughter, generosity, and unwavering devotion to her family will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Hazel was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bob McCord; her daughter, Janet Kay Buchanan; her parents, Willie Mae and Thomas Levi Romine; eight siblings; and her grandson, Christopher Shawn Buchanan.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Robert Wayne McCord; her daughter, Cindy Geneva (James) Buchanan; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other beloved family members.

Trinity Funeral Services is honored to serve the McCord family in their time of need and asks that you remember them in your thoughts and prayers through the days ahead.
