With heavy hearts and unwavering faith in God’s promises, we celebrate the life and legacy of Gwenyth Faye Monroe Curtis, lovely known as Ms. Cookie, who peacefully entered eternal rest on July 8, 2026, at the age of 78.
Cookie was born on October 23, 1947, in Pensacola, FL, to Horace and Ethel Mary Monroe Jr. She graduated from Locker High School in 1965, with a strong desire to attend Alcorn University. She fulfilled her desire and graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. She relocated to Kankakee, IL, where she furthered her education and received her Master’s Degree. It was there that she met her special friend, Carla Shivers Wright. Cookie lived a life devoted to God, family, and serving others.
After returning to Wiggins, Mississippi, she united with Wiggins Church of God in Christ before later moving her membership to New Welcome Hill Baptist Church. There, she faithfully served as an Evangelist, founder of The Women of God Mission Group, Choir Director, Sunday School Teacher, and a devoted mentor to countless young people. Her unwavering faith, compassionate heart, and willingness to serve made her a pillar in her church and community.
Gwenyth was a woman of wisdom, grace, and strength. She never met a stranger and was known for her encouraging words, loving spirit, and steadfast belief in God’s promises. She found great joy in uplifting others, sharing God’s Word, and ensuring those around her felt loved and supported. Her legacy of faith and service will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her.
She was preceded in death by two of her beloved daughters, Marilyn Hope Monroe and Tesha Renee Jones; and her grandson, Jalen Curtis.
She leaves, to cherish her precious memories, her loving children, Tikira B. Smith, Mia T. Harrison (Ronald), Phazon Curtis (Danielle), and her brothers, Gerald (Marilyn) Monroe, Terry Monroe, and Timothy (Cynthia) Monroe.
She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Teresa Monroe, Tayzshana (Keisha) Nelson, Day’Shaun (Tiffany) Smith, Sha’Quice Smith, Justin Smith, Lyndale (Niesha) Jones, and Feldon Arrington III, along with a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, church family, and dear friends who will forever treasure her love, wisdom, and beautiful example of faith.
Although our hearts are saddened by her passing, we rejoice knowing that she has heard the words, “Well done, thy good and faithful servant.” Her life was a testament to God’s love, and her legacy will continue to live on in every life she touched.
“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” — 2 Timothy 4:7
