Gladys Varnado Lee, a beloved mother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2026. Born on August 4, 1953, she lived a life marked by kindness, dedication, and a spirit of generosity that touched everyone who knew her. Gladys’s early years were shaped by her education at Harrison County schools, where she was an active participant in numerous extracurricular activities including basketball, softball, and cheerleading. Her vibrant personality and love for life were evident from a young age, traits that continued to define her throughout her lifetime. Her career journey began as a seamstress for Pass Christian Industries, a role she held with pride and skill. She worked various jobs, including at an ammunition plant, but it was at Walmart where she found her calling and true community. There, Gladys worked for more than 20 years, embracing multiple roles and forming deep, lasting friendships. Her coworkers remember her as a dependable, caring individual who made the workplace a better place with her warm spirit and dedication.
Gladys was widely known for her readiness to help anyone in need. She had a wonderful habit of dropping everything to lend a hand at any moment. This selflessness was a hallmark of her character and a source of comfort to many. She took joy in dancing and had a special fondness for country music, which brought happiness to her and those around her. Family reunions were cherished occasions where Gladys reveled in spending time with loved ones, celebrating the bonds that were so important to her. An easy-going nature made her a beloved companion in all settings.
Above all, Gladys’s proudest accomplishment was her son, Billy Douglas Jr., who was her pride and joy. Her love for him was boundless and stood at the center of her life.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, Etta and L.C. Varnado; her husband, Leroy Lee; her sister Delphine O'Mara; her brothers Harold Varnado and D.C. Varnado; and her nieces and nephews Susan “Susie” Homan, Tonya Johnson, Jeff Ladner, Kenneth “Peanut” Young, Keith “Peewee” Young, and great-nephew Dustin Crawford.
She is survived by her son Billy Douglas Jr, sisters Ethel Ladner, Mary Liz Moran, and Mary Lindsay, who she regarded as a sister in heart, as well as her brother Leslie Varnado. They will forever cherish and hold dear the memories and life spent with her.
Special gratitude is extended to Steve Varnado, Jeanette Cuevas, Darlene Story, and the Gentiva Hospice staff for the exceptional care and compassion they provided during Gladys’s final days.
