Garry W. Kopp, a Navy veteran, and beloved member of his community, passed away on May 3, 2026, at the age of 80. Born on January 23, 1946, Garry’s life was marked by commitment—to his family, his career, and the enriching experiences that brought joy to his everyday existence.

Garry’s early years were shaped by a strong sense of duty and service. He enlisted in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War era, proudly earning the National Defense Service Medal. His military affiliation endured throughout his life as a proud 56-year member of the American Legion, reflecting a lifelong dedication to his country and fellow veterans.

Following his military service, Garry pursued higher education at Eastern Kentucky University, where he earned a degree in Accounting. With a solid foundation in this field, he embarked on a longstanding career working for the State of New Jersey, ultimately retiring from the Department of Corrections. His professional endeavors were marked by a steadfast work ethic and an unwavering commitment to public safety and service.

Beyond his career, Garry was cherished for his warm, caring, and generous nature. He found profound joy in both the small, quiet moments and the grander adventures life offered. Time spent outdoors was especially meaningful to him. Whether kayaking and floating the creek or exploring new waters aboard his sailboat during weekend excursions, Garry embraced nature’s beauty with enthusiasm and reverence. He was also an avid golfer, a lover of annual skiing trips, and possessed a keen interest in collecting firearms, passions that enriched his life and reflected his diverse interests.

Garry loved his life in Wiggins and the extended family that adopted him there, in particular Aaron, Tanner, and special buddy Micah, the Morris boys who played a significant role in his life and whom he loved dearly. His devotion to family was equally evident within his immediate circle. He is survived by his wife, Deb-b Kopp; his siblings Patricia Lenheer, Janet (with Paul Mosner), David (with Colleen Joseph), and Jimmy (with Jean Kopp); as well as ten nieces and nephews, including Angela Smith (with Chris) and Craig Smith (with Caitlin), who occupied a special place in his heart. Garry also delighted in the company of his grand-nephew, Teddy. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Josephine and William Kopp.

A memorial gathering to honor Garry’s life and legacy will be held on May 24, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Flint Creek Lodge Hall, located at 1216 Parkway Drive, Wiggins, MS 39577. This event will provide an opportunity for friends, family, and all who knew him to come together in remembrance and celebration of a life well lived.

Garry W. Kopp’s legacy is one of service, adventure, and profound appreciation for the beauty of daily life. He will be remembered not only for his contributions to his nation and community but also for the kindness and generosity that defined his character. His presence will be sorely missed, even as his impact endures in the hearts of those who loved him.
