Eugene "Gene" Joseph Mccabe

Eugene Joseph McCabe, 78, of Metairie, Louisiana, passed away on October 01, 2024, at St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington, LA. Gene, as he was lovingly known his whole life, was born on January 9, 1946, in New Orleans, LA to his parents Raymond James and Carmelite (Hadley) McCabe, Sr. Gene grew up in New Orleans and loved to participate in Mardi Gras as a part of the Krewe of Endymion for many years. At the ripe age of 17, Gene started work for the New Orleans School Board as a Plumber and retired after forty-three years when Hurricane Katrina hit and the city retired the department he worked for. In 1975, Gene would move to Metairie, where he and his bride, Joanie would raise their girls together until she passed in 2007. Gene was an avid hunter and enjoyed the woods right here in Poplarville, MS where he went by several different names, including G Man, Red, and Chopsley. Gene made many friends over the years here in the great Mississippi outdoors through not only hunting but fishing too. Gene will be immensely missed by all who knew and loved him.  Gene is preceded in death by his loving wife of thirty years, Joanie Mardis McCabe; his parents, Raymond James and Carmelite (Hadley) McCabe, Sr.; and one brother Raymond McCabe, Jr. Left to cherish his memory, his two daughters, Cynthia (Carl) Brown and Analisa (Augusto) Herrera; one grandson Nicolas Herrera; and one sister, Carmen McCabe Judd. Gene leaves a legacy of numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends, whom he loved and cared for very much. Services for Gene will be held Saturday, October 5, 2024, beginning at 10:30 am for Public Visitation, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:30 and Interment directly following at Hester Loop Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest next to his wife, Joanie.
