Ernest Carroll “Ernie” Smith, Jr.

Ernest Carroll “Ernie” Smith, Jr., of Necaise Crossing, Mississippi, passed away on August 10, 2026. Known as “Little Carroll” in his younger years, Ernie was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, remembered for his hard work, fierce loyalty, generosity, and unmistakable sense of humor.

Ernie grew up in Gulfport and attended St. John’s Elementary and High School, where he played football, basketball, and baseball. He co-captained an undefeated conference-championship football team and later became the starting catcher for St. John’s baseball team. His love of sports lasted a lifetime.

His greatest love was his high school sweetheart, Sky Dwane Ladner Smith. Together they raised two sons, Dustin and Blake. Ernie taught his boys that taking care of a family is one of the greatest acts of love a man can perform. He taught it by example—through early mornings, late shifts, long drives to work at Sears in Biloxi and Hattiesburg, and years of putting his family before himself.

He expected his sons to work hard, make good grades, and stand up for themselves. But they also knew their father would always be there to back them up. Ernie loved fiercely, protected his family just as fiercely, and would give you the shirt off his back.

His grandchildren—Connor, Courtney, Asher, and Liam—were among the greatest joys of his life. He spoiled them shamelessly and especially loved taking them fishing.

Ernie was smart, quick-witted, and very funny, with a particular talent for jokes that were not always appropriate. He loved sports, fishing, casinos, slot machines, and a good casino buffet—especially crab legs. Those who knew him will remember how often he made them laugh.

Ernie was a member of St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Carroll Smith, Sr. and Rose Marie Castiglia Smith.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Sky; sons Dustin (Michelle) and Blake (Sarah); grandchildren Connor, Courtney, Asher, and Liam; brother Joseph “Scotty” Smith; sister Sandra Marie Smith; and his faithful blue heeler, Bella.

Ernie leaves behind a family that knows what it means to be loved completely.

He taught his sons how to stand on their own, but he never taught them how to do it without him standing behind them.
