Elder Vernon Dwight Smith

Elder Vernon "Dwight" Smith, 65, of Lumberton, passed away at his residence on Saturday, March 26, 2016. Bro. Dwight was born and grew up in the Caney community in Lamar county. He was ordained into the gospel ministry at Elder Ridge Baptist Church, and spent some 40 years pastoring around the South MS area in Landmark Missionary Baptist churches. He has pastored Charity BC in Waveland, Long Beach, Bayou Talla, Slade BC in Purvis, Cedar Dale in Saucier, Black Creek in Brooklyn, New Faith in Picayune, and most recently at San Pedro in Franklinton, LA. He also pastored a church in Pensacola, FL a few years ago. He is survived by his loving wife, Jean Anderson Smith, and their 4 children, daughters Kim Fillingame of Lumberton, and Kay Sones (Ben) of McNeil; and sons Billy Smith and Denny Smith, both of Lumberton; 3 sisters, Beverly Young, Glenda Mardis, and Faye Loupe, and 1 brother, Kenny Smith; and 8 wonderful grandchildren, whom he loved so much. He was preceded by his parents, Vernon Bill Smith and Ethel Hartfield Smith, and 2 sisters, Raye and Pat. The visitation will be Tuesday evening, March 29th, from 6 to 9 PM at Caney Baptist Church. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday morning, March 30th, at 11 AM. A procession from the church to Pine Ridge Hartfield Cemetery in Purvis will follow for interment.
