Edythe (Edith) Marilyn Mathis, 85, of Perkinston, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2026, at Azalea Gardens Nursing Home in Wiggins, following a long illness. 

Born on June 21, 1941, in Waterbury, Connecticut, Edythe was the daughter of Charles Drew Glover and Emma Ann (Kochis) Glover. She shared a special lifelong bond with her identical twin sister, Patricia. The sisters grew up in Naugatuck, where Edythe attended Kaynor Technical School before joining Uniroyal in Waterbury.

 Her twin sister once described their connection this way: “We always knew what the other was going to say. It’s in the genes. The synchronicity that twins experience is undeniable—our thoughts and words were shared before a conversation was even had, no matter the distance between us. This closeness remained constant throughout our lives. Our life journey began together; we were each other’s anchor, helping one another through life’s every up and down. I feel truly blessed for our 85 years together.” “I’m very grateful to have recently spent time with her and the children in Mississippi.” 

On May 2, 1959, Edythe married Bobby Joe Mathis in Miami, Florida. Together, they first made their home in Naugatuck CT. before moving to Homestead, FL There, while raising five children, they started their own business Glowmat Auto Tops, which they owned and operated for years. After the hurricanes in homestead, they moved the business to Perkinston, Mississippi, where Edythe continued running the business and building a life centered on family, kindness, and caring for others.

 A Woman Who Was Always There Edythe was kind to everyone and always willing to help, whatever it cost her—often without anyone ever knowing. Everyone loved her. Her children are only now learning, from her twin sister, just how many things Edythe quietly did for each of them over the years. She taught her children to think of others before speaking and to look out for the people around them. When her first grandchild was born, she was there to help. And when her daughter Tracey was experiencing her first episode of what would later be discovered to be diabetes—feeling strange and behaving unusually—Edythe knew right away that something wasn’t right. She became the ultimate ambulance driver and got Tracey to the hospital just in time. That was Edythe: she noticed, she cared, and when someone needed her, she was there. The Little Things Everyone Will Remember Every morning, Edythe would get up and drink her hot tea. She loved planting flowers, traveling, and especially a good trip to the casino. She loved candy—butterscotch and chocolate above all. Once, she posted a single word on Facebook: BUTTERSCOTCH It was her not-so-subtle hope that someone would take the hint. Her family will remember her stuffed cabbage, saffron chicken and rice, fried cube steaks, pork chops, and Hungarian goulash. And then there were the apple pancakes, which she would happily feed to the neighborhood. But her signature dish was her spaghetti. She would cook a giant pot of it, and there was simply nothing like it. Edythe was also a lifelong Catholic. 

Edythe is survived by her five children, Patricia Ann, Robert Joseph, Steven Jeffery, Tracey Lynn, and James Drew; her identical twin sister, Patricia Ann Marcisz; her grandchildren, Casey Armstrong, Krystal Nicole (Nikki) Perry, Cody Mathis, Chelsey Day, Taylor Day, Darlene Erma Emma (Stella) Mathis, Sarah Beth Mathis, Steven Mathis Jr., Donald Mathis, Devon Mathis, and Chris Mathis; and many great-grandchildren, including Robert Perry Jr., Kira Perry, Elias Jaeger, Steven Krinke, Sadie Day, Zoe Day, Annabelle Mathis, Zailah Mathis, Lainey Mathis, Kasey Claudine Cox, and Athena Marie Ella Holway. Along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.

 She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Bobby Joe Mathis; her parents, Charles Drew Glover and Emma Ann (Kochis) Glover; and her younger brother, Gary Glover and his son, Tad.
