Ms. Dovie Whatley Parker

December 1, 1923 — January 23, 2018

Dovie Whatley Parker, 94 of McHenry, passed away peacefully at her daughter's home in Big Level on January 23, 2018. Dovie was born Dec. 1, 1923, one of three children to Wilson Reuben Whatley and Claressa Abbigail Breland, and was born on her parents' homestead in Perry County. In her early years she was a member of the McHenry Ladies Club, loved to crochet and quilt, read the Bible, and serve her family, church, and community in any way she could. This included helping ladies with hair permanents, driving the sick to doctors, and even giving shots under the direction of their doctor. Dovie was a devout Christian and life-long member of Sunflower Landmark Missionary Baptist Church, where she served and played piano for many years. She loved the outdoors and animals, living in rural McHenry along with pet dogs, cats, and horses, and occasionally tending to cattle and chickens. Even later in life she could be seen mowing her yard, being followed by her Jack Russel mix, 'Sport' and German Shepherd, 'Brownie'. She will be fondly remembered, and sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. Dovie is survived by her four children: William Wilson Parker of Biloxi, Claressa (Woody) Rustin of Neely, Billie Sue (Alan) Wright of Big Level, and Milton R. (Beverly King) Parker of McHenry; Twelve grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. In addition to her parents, Dovie was preceded in death by her husband, Billie Parker, her sister, Myrle Whatley Hannum, her brother, Rev. David B. Whatley, and a grandson, Luther Newitt Blackwell III. The family will receive friends for visitation starting at 1:00 PM on Thursday, Jan. 25th, followed by a chapel service at 2:00 PM, all at Trinity Funeral Services in McHenry. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery in McHenry. The family thanks those who prayed and or visited Ms. Parker during her illness; and a special thanks to the Southern Hearts Hospice team who so lovingly served her. Trinity Funeral Services is honored to serve the Parker family in their time of need, and asks that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
