Dorty Cuevas, age 93, of the Standard Community in Hancock County, passed from this life to the next on Monday evening, July 4th, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. Nicknamed John by his mother, Dorty was born October 1st, 1928, and christened Dartian Joseph Cuevas, the son of the late Albert Cuevas and Rachel "Ba-Bae" (Deschamp) Cuevas. From an early age he had a strong work ethic, which continued all his life. In his own words, "as soon as I was big enough to carry a cotton sack, I started working in the field picking cotton and hoeing corn rows.". His earliest memories were working from sun rise to sun set in the fields with the rest of his family. Dorty was one of twenty-one brothers and sisters, all of whom he loved dearly and gave him many nieces and nephews. In his life he worked many jobs and wore many different hats. When he was a young boy, he worked in the saw mills and at sixteen years old, he was a laborer working at the Port of Gulfport during World War II. He was a farmer…planting crops, raising horses, cows, and hogs. He worked at the grain elevator and the enamel plants in Bay St. Louis. He was trapper, and hunted alligator with his father-in-law Burdic Rester, and a logger, running his own crew for many years. Needless to say, Dorty was pretty much always busy. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Wolf Creek Baptist Church in the Standard Community, where he baptized by the Rev. Fedrick Wilson Rester at the age of eleven. Although he had no formal education, having left school in the third grade, he could build and fabricate anything he was shown. He had a great sense of humor and loved to joke and make everyone he came into contact with smile and laugh, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. When you were welcomed into his home you were a part of his family. He never met a stranger and was always willing to help those in need. On January 11th, 1951, he married the love of his life, Vernelee Rester, after a short courtship. Although she passed one day after their thirtieth wedding anniversary, Dorty spent every day of the next forty-one years missing her, always telling everyone that she was the best wife any man could have ever asked for. He was called many things; a son, a brother, a husband, a daddy, and an uncle, but the greatest thing he was called was Papa. Dorty was definitely one-of-a-kind, and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Including his parents and his wife, he is preceded in death by two sons, Dennis Dan and Jackie Wayne Cuevas; two daughters, Vernell Cuevas Peterson Hoda and Karen Faye Cuevas; brothers Cleveland Cuevas, Clifton Cuevas, Fred Cuevas, Oliver "Jug" Cuevas, Robert "Rob" Cuevas, Lucien Cuevas, Holliman "Joe" Cuevas, Horton "Hart" Cuevas, Barney Cuevas, and Donivan Cuevas; sisters Alphoncene Cuevas Saucier, Lucenia Cuevas, Velena Cuevas, Elsie Cuevas, Elena Cuevas Head, Mandy Lillian Cuevas, Eva Mae Cuevas Necaise, Mattie Mae Cuevas Ladner, two unnamed infant siblings; several grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. Left to cherish the many fond memories are: his children, Daniel Celester "Boon" Cuevas, Susan Annette Cuevas Necaise, Daniel Ray "Danny Boy" Hoda, and Dorty Joseph "Joey" Necaise. He is also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Mr. Cuevas will be returned to his home Thursday, July 7th at five o'clock, where family and friends may pay their respects and say their final goodbyes. On Friday, July 8th at two o'clock, the funeral service will be held at the residence, with Pastor Josh Daniels officiating. Afterward he will be interred beside his wife in Wolf Creek Cemetery. Trinity Funeral Services is honored to serve the Cuevas family in their time of need, and asks everyone to keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this trying time.
