With hearts overflowing with both sorrow and deep gratitude, we commemorate the extraordinary life of Dorothy Ann (Stockstill) Ladner, who departed this earth peacefully in the comfort of her home, on August 10, 2026, in Carriere, Mississippi, at the age of 98. Born in Picayune, Mississippi, on October 14, 1927, Dorothy was the cherished daughter of Joel Ernest and Mary Jane (Mamie) Stockstill, the youngest of ten siblings, and a woman whose spirit touched generations and communities.  Dorothy emerged from a large, loving family, molded by the rich values and warmth of her upbringing in Picayune.  As the baby of ten children, she inherited a legacy of faith, resilience, and a steadfast devotion to family. Those early years imbued her with a resolve and kindness that would guide her throughout her life and career.

Her journey of learning led her to The University of Southern Mississippi, where, through remarkable determination, she earned her master’s degrees in both reading and education administration. Dorothy’s lifelong passion for education was more than a vocation; it was a calling. Beginning her career in the Hancock County Schools, she became a cornerstone of reading education programs for both Hancock and Picayune School Systems. Dorothy’s crowning achievement was her role as Principal at Nicholson Elementary School in Nicholson, Mississippi, where her leadership inspired countless students and educators up until her retirement. She was known for her gentle nature, her soft-spokenness, and her uncanny patience—qualities that were mirrored in every classroom and every life she touched.

Dorothy’s personal life was no less rich and meaningful. In 1950, she married Robert Frank Ladner, a beloved partner with whom she shared fifty-eight years of love and devotion. Together, they cultivated a family rooted in unconditional love and boundless care. Dorothy was the most beautiful and loving mother. She and her daughter, Louise Ladner Miller, shared many special moments throughout these last ten years, while Louise provided exceptional care and companionship for her mother. A woman of profound faith, Dorothy’s love for the Lord permeated all she did. She began each year by reading her Bible in January, completing it each December for twenty years—a spiritual discipline reflected in her deep devotion and quiet wisdom. Known for taking notes on every sermon she attended or watched from home, her dedication to the Word served as a beacon for her family and friends. Her infectious laugh, gentle manner, and capacity for conversation brought light into the lives of all who knew her. The simple pleasures were Dorothy’s joy. From crafting the best chicken and seafood gumbo for holidays, reading beloved books, watching ministry services from her favorite chair, or rocking contentedly on her back porch as birds fluttered nearby, her home in Carriere was her sanctuary, where she savored the company of family.

Dorothy’s giving nature and understated strength endure in the memories of those blessed to have known her. She was a devoted teacher, a loving wife and mother, a person of steadfast faith, and a woman who "could not wait" to be home with Jesus. Her family and friends will always remember her gentle “finger-pointing” guidance, her steady hand, and her remarkable ability to point others toward kindness, patience, and integrity. Though she has left this earthly home, Dorothy’s devotion, wisdom, and love will echo through the lives and hearts of all those she touched. We honor her with the same grace and gentle strength with which she graced the world. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of fifty-eight years, Robert Frank Ladner; one son, Kenneth Robert Ladner; her parents, Joel Ernest and Mary Jane (Mamie) Stockstill; and nine brothers and sisters; R.D., Edna, Sarah Inez, Zula, Jake, Harry, Roy, Louise, and Eugene. Left to cherish a life well lived are her daughter, Lousie Ladner Miller; and her granddaughter, Ashley Miller.  As well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.  

Her daughter, Louise, would like to extend a special "Thank You" to Enhabit Hospice Care, specifically Ms. Dorothy's nurses, Ashley Cortez and Gabby Sorenson, who went above and beyond caring for her mother.  And to her cousins, who are more like sisters, Sharla Seal, Barbara Rettig, and Gwyn Allain; as well as cousins, Larry and Melanie Stockstill, Amy Redmond, and Jennifer Stockstill, for offering unconditional love, laughter, and support every step of the way during this season of life.  

A graveside service celebrating Dorothy Ann Ladner’s beautiful life will be held on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at New Palestine Baptist Church Cemetery, located at 2336 Palestine Road, Picayune, Mississippi. Trinity Funeral Services is honored to serve the Ladner family during this time, and we ask that you remember Louise and the rest of her family, over the coming days ahead.
