David Allen Whinery, lovingly known as "Big David," departed this world on December 24, 2025, in D’lberville. Born on February 26, 1957, he lived a life filled with laughter, love, and unforgettable memories, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him.
David dedicated many years of his career to working for the Isle of Capri and later the Golden Nugget, before enjoying a well-deserved retirement. It was not just in his professional life that he made an impact; his enduring spirit and his ability to bring joy were hallmarks of his personality. Known for his sense of humor and his incredible generosity, he was a man who would give you the shirt off his back without hesitation, embodying the very essence of kindness.
A devoted fan of the New Orleans Saints, David found immense joy in cheering for his favorite team. His passion for the game was infectious, bringing family and friends together to share in the triumphs and defeats of every season. David loved the Saints but he loved his family, friends, and pets even more.
David leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish their time with him. He is survived by his wife, Mary Whinery; his daughters, Lora Townsend and Amanda (Brent) Hickman; his stepdaughter, Katherine McGowen; and stepson, Eddie Baker III. The love he had for his grandchildren, Brennan, Samuel, and Josie, was immeasurable, and he was incredibly proud of each one. He is also mourned by numerous nieces and nephews who will carry forward the memories of their beloved "Big David."
He reunites now with his father, Ezra L. Whinery; his mother, Audie L. (Fryery) Whinery; and his brother, George Whinery, who have been waiting to embrace him once again.
As we gather to remember David, let us celebrate a life that taught us the importance of humor in our darkest moments and the beauty of unconditional love. Though he has departed from our sight, his spirit will live on in the laughter and stories shared by those he leaves behind. Rest in peace, dear Big David, you will be deeply missed and forever cherished. In honor of Big David’s love for the Saints we ask every one to wear black and gold at the celebration of life.
