David Carrell Rainey

July 11, 1954 — April 2, 2022

Lumberton

David Carrell Rainey, Sr., 67 of Lumberton, passed away April 02, 2022 at Merit Health in Hattiesburg, MS. He was born July 11, 1954 at the old Methodist Hospital in Hattiesburg, the fifth of nine children to Ray Andrew and Lillian Virginia (Mullins) Rainey. Growing up in Hattiesburg, David was a South MS country boy and enjoyed all things outdoors. As he got older, he developed a passion for hot rods and classic cars. He attended Hattiesburg schools, earned his GED, and went to work as a police officer in Purvis, but that wasn't really where his heart was. David went to work for MFC and found something he truly enjoyed in the trucking industry. For several years he dispatched trucks and started driving some as well. But that's not the whole story. You see, David was adventurous and dabbled in several things. From Shirley's I-59 Diner to Pappy's BBQ, B & M Glass Repair, B.R.S. Trucking, 7 C's Trucking, and eventually David Rainey Trucking, he was ever the entrepreneur. He was always busy doing something, but one thing he never forgot was to make time for his family. David loved his family and wanted them around him as much as possible. He enjoyed cooking and was pretty accomplished at it. He started an annual crawfish boil for family and close friends many years ago, and they plan to continue them. For fun, he tinkered with old cars, trucks, tractors and more. Over the past few years he got into gardening, and grew a large vegetable garden with his family. There wasn't really much that he hasn't done, or tried at least once. David will definitely be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded by his parents, Ray and Lillian Rainey; his loving wife Shirley (Slade) Rainey; one daughter, Bridgett Rainey; sisters Peggy Rainey and Edna Hancock, and brothers Paul, Charles, and Ronnie Rainey. Left to cherish his memories are: his daughters Monica (Stacy) Landrum of Lumberton, and Brandie (Joe) Johnson of Prentiss, with his son David "D.C." Rainey, Jr. of Purvis; his siblings, Gary (Cheryl) Rainey of Harahan, LA, Rose (Ray) Burt of Vermont, and Anita Rainey of Hattiesburg. He leaves a legacy of fourteen grandchildren, nine great-grands, and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family, all of whom affectionately referred to him as either "Pappy" or "Pawpaw". Services will be held at Trinity Funeral Services' Lumberton location, with visitation from 6:00 until 9:00 PM Thursday evening, April 7th, with another hours of visitation beginning at 9:00 AM Friday morning. A chapel service will begin at 10:00 AM, with Bros. Joe Lott and Jesse Ladner officiating. Afterward, David will be laid to rest in the Lee-Ladner Cemetery in Lumberton. Trinity Funeral Services is honored to serve the Rainey family in their time of need and asks everyone to keep them in your thoughts and prayers through this trying time.
