David Lee Holmes

David Lee Holmes, 45 and lifelong resident of McHenry, passed away Monday, January 22, 2024 at Memorial Hospital of Stone County in Wiggins. He was born February 17, 1978 in Gulfport, the youngest of two children to Sidney and Shirley (Rettig) Holmes. Known to most everyone as Lee, he grew up in McHenry where he enjoyed the outdoors and riding motorcycles and four wheelers. He was a rambunctious young boy, very active and outgoing, and enjoyed the country life and playing with his friends. His dad was in construction and Lee worked with him, learning carpentry and roofing. Lee attended Stone County schools, graduating from Stone High with the Class of 1997. Afterward he went to Perk for a bit, all while continuing to work with his father. Lee stayed in McHenry, calling it home his entire life. In his spare time, he enjoyed tinkering on cars, even building a race car or two along the way. In recent years, he enjoyed fishing and throwing the ball with his nephew, and just being with his family. Lee was a loving son, brother, uncle, and friend to many. His memories will live on in the hearts and minds of all who knew and loved him. He was preceded by his grandparents, Ann Perry, Richard Rettig, Eva Booker, and Archie Holmes. Left to cherish his memories are: his loving parents, Sidney and Shirley Holmes of McHenry; his sister, Kelly (Eric) Lum of Hawaii, and their children, twin nieces Alexa and Arielle, and his nephew Tiago. Lee leaves a host of extended family and many friends who will all miss him dearly. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 27th at McHenry Missionary Baptist Church where Lee attended. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, followed by the funeral service at noon with Pastor Reece Bazor officiating. Afterward, Lee will be laid to rest in the McHenry Gardens Cemetery.
