Charles Edwin Gibson, 54 of the Silver Run community, passed away Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hospital in Stone County. He was born Dec. 14, 1965 in Dothan, AL, the son of David Ross and Mable Jo (Shutes) Mathis. Known by most as Eddie from an early age, he would grow up in the Gulfport area since the family moved to the MS Gulf Coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Camille for construction work. He came to love the beach, being on the water and fishing, camping and other outdoors things, but his true passion was music. He began playing the guitar and writing songs, which he did quite a lot of in his life. Eddie made a career working for himself in construction and carpentry, and there was really nothing he couldn't do. If you could think it up, he could build it for you. In his spare time, he was either picking out a new song on his guitar, or he was taking care of his granddaughter Harley. She was his world and Eddie spent as much time with her as possible, teaching her how to fish among other things and was actually with her when she caught her first one. Eddie is remembered as a great, loving brother and family man. He was a talented musician and song writer that possessed a wonderful sense of humor...no joke dude! He will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Eddie was preceded by his parents David Mathis and Mable Jo McNease. Left to sing his songs and cherish his memories are: his son Josh Phelps of Wiggins; two sisters, Angela Tillery and Donna Martin, both of Dothan, with his brother Tracy Mathis of Biloxi. Eddie also leaves a young lady he simply adored, his granddaughter Harley Phelps, along with numerous extended family, friends and satisfied customers through the years. His final wishes were to be cremated, which his family is honoring and will plan a memorial celebration for a later date. Trinity Funeral Services is honored to serve the Gibson family in their time of need, asking everyone to keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
