Beleta Louise Duncan, affectionately known to all as "Smitty," passed away peacefully on the 23rd of June, 2025, in Mc Henry, MS, at the age of 78. Born on October 23, 1946, in Hattiesburg, MS, she was the cherished daughter of the late Harry C. Lee and Annie G. Morris. Smitty's warmth and nurturing spirit will be forever remembered by those who knew her. Smitty was a pillar of strength and love, celebrated for her lifelong dedication to her family. Smitty’s educational journey was marked by determination; she earned her GED in Harrison County, followed by a secretary’s certificate, and later became a certified nurse's assistant. Her unparalleled commitment to her family deemed her the "best momma ever" and "mom to many." Her dedication was not just limited to her own children, as she shared her boundless love and care with others in need, reflecting her motto of never letting anyone go hungry. A true embodiment of selflessness, Smitty wore many hats as a mother and was heralded for loving unconditionally, just as Jesus did. Her faith was an important aspect of her life which she nurtured through reading her Bible. She enjoyed simple pleasures, such as sitting on her porch watching it rain, observing the playful antics of squirrels, or spending time fishing on the water. Her true passion was looking after all her “babies," ensuring their well-being above all else. Moreover, Smitty liked watching crime reality shows, which appealed to her analytical mind. In her quieter moments, Smitty found joy in the pages of her favorite scriptures and the calm that nature brought to her doorstep. Memorial date to be announced at a later date.
Preceding her in death were her loving husband Wilfred C. Duncan “Buddy”, her beloved parents, her brother Richard Smith, her children Barbara Ann, Callis Duncan, and Gerard Duncan, as well as her granddaughter Elaine "Lanie" Slusher and grandson Johnathon Ladner. Her enduring legacy continues through her children James Duncan, Exie Doherty(Jerry), Watha Chambers, Estus Smith, Shawn Thorn (Joe), Richard Duncan (Amanda), Dewayne Duncan (Jenn), Deanna Slusher (Kenny), Mike Hill (Adrienne), April “Big Girl” Duncan , and Rebecca Jones. She was also a proud and devoted grandmother and great-grandmother to numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Smitty's extensive family further included a plethora of nieces, nephews, and a host of extended family members and friends who adored her.
The story of Smitty's life cannot be told without acknowledging the infinite depth of her kindness and the positive impact she made on her community. We will miss her profoundly but take solace in knowing that her legacy of love, care, and strong family values will continue to ripple through generations.
